Packing is a peculiar phenomenon. For most people the idea of mastering the ‘art of packing’ is about as exciting as contracting herpes, but for some reason it sends travel writers into overdrive. This editorial netherworld is strewn with questionable mantras suggesting that the path to true enlightenment must be trodden with one small piece of hand luggage; preferably on wheels.
All this is very well if you overlook the significant detail that we’re living in the age of the shopper. Even if you embark on weekend city break with one bag; the chances of leaving with a free hand are slim. Zen monks might be able to travel across the Himalayas with little more than a prayer mat and begging bowl, but modern Europe is altogether a more testing environment for the independent traveller.
Packing should be done with one eye on the barometer, as the weather is the single most important consideration. Diamante sandals might be just the thing for Monte Carlo’s waterfront, but they won’t be much use on a frosty morning in Prague’s Wenceslas Square. The chances are that you’ll want something dressy for the evening, but most of the day you’ll be on your feet sightseeing; so think about packing comfortable and practical clothing.
Remember that weekend city breaks last a weekend (i.e. 48 hours) and that there’s only so much clothing you can wear. Once you’ve decided what to take: unpack everything, half the number of clothes and we guarantee that you’ll still have too much. If you can manage to squeeze everything into your hand baggage you’ll avoid the usual scramble at the baggage carousel.
Aside from your passport the only other documentation you’ll need is medical cover. A number of European countries have reciprocal health care agreements with the UK (just pick up an E1-11 application from the Post Office), but it’s still wise to double check with the Foreign Office. If you’re travelling with valuables it may be worth considering baggage insurance, but make sure that you read the small print first as some companies levy exorbitant ‘excess charges’. Traveller’s cheques are pretty old hat now and your bankcard should cover most eventualities. Finally you’ll need to think about what reading material to take: a good guidebook will prove invaluable on the ground, while a novel will stave off the boredom of a delayed flight.
