There are few better ways to escape the monotony of the nine-to-five working week than by booking a last minute city break. Spend an idle Thursday lunchtime surfing the net and by Friday evening you could be wondering along Paris’ left bank or lost in the labyrinthine backstreets of Barcelona’s Barri Gotic. In recent years the demand for last minute city breaks has surged, competition has stiffened and prices have dropped; so there’s never been a better time to book a 48-hour sabbatical from the humdrum cycle of daily life.
When the dotcom bubble burst at the turn of the millennia few companies online companies were left standing. However, one notable exception was lastminute.com. They tapped into a growing market and have since been joined by the likes of expedia.com and opodo.com. This new breed of online travel agents has gone a long way to prove that there’s money to be made in selling holidays at prices that customers can’t refuse; even if they didn’t really want the holiday in the first case.
Booking a last minute city break package is doubtless the easiest way to organise a weekend away. However, with the continuing boom in low cost airlines it may not be the cheapest. If you’re feeling creative it’s relatively straightforward to book separate flights, accommodation and car hire for considerably less than an online travel agent will charge. If you decide to go down this route make sure that you factor in additional airport taxes and transfer costs.
Teletext may not be the first logical point of call for anyone booking a city break, but when it comes to late deals they are hard to beat. For the best prices it pays to keep an open mind about where you want to go and you should be able to secure a bargain in no time. If you aren’t having much luck with electronic media try the high street as most travel agents slash prices to shift unsold holidays within a week or two of travelling.
