Europe City Break

The staple diet of European city breaks has traditionally been London, Paris, Vienna, Madrid and Rome. In recent years though this has been supplemented with new cities such as Warsaw, Dublin and Barcelona. Many of them have cornered niche markets; for example the traditional stag night in Blackpool has long given way to 48 hours of partying in Prague whilst Amsterdam has been luring fans of the ‘herbal cigarette’ to its coffee shops for decades.

A European city-break offers even the most jaded of palates quick and easy stimulation with the knowledge that you can still be in work by Monday morning (not that you’ll get much done). They’ve diversified to such an extent that you can pretty well satisfy any appetite via a two-hour flight on Easyjet and plenty of people looking for ‘something on the weekend’ are finding it on the other side of the channel.

Last year over 5.7 million short break holidays were taken and a large segment of these went to affluent young professionals. Online booking and cheap flights have been crucial in accelerating demand and making foreign trips on Friday nights feasible. The excitement offered by a weekend away is difficult to beat and is also an ideal present for the lovesick and weary.

The European city break market is a volatile one. Eastern Europe has recently seen a surge of demand and a new constellation of cities is emerging. Increased numbers mean increased competition and city authorities have to work hard to sustain the interest of travellers who can easily book somewhere else. At the moment economics is still crucial; the most popular breaks are still the cheapest but as airfares fall then new destinations come within reach.

2003’s winners were Paris, Amsterdam, Bruges and Rome; all of which were established favourites. 11% of Britons interviewed recently were set to head for Paris in the coming months and the French Tourist Board stated that British visitors account for an average of 1,358,000 hotel arrivals each year. That’s the equivalent of the entire population of Lisbon arriving annually and gives you some idea of how city-breaks are such big business.
