Cheap city breaks remain extremely popular with British holidaymakers and last year almost 6 million people headed off for a weekend away. Here are some handy hints and tips that should help your trip go smoothly.
When to go; The obvious times to avoid travelling are school holidays as swarms of kids head off with their parents for the obligatory two-week purgatory that is the family holiday. Off-peak cheap city breaks are best as the sights should be crowd-free and hotels and restaurants will go out of their way to make you feel welcome. In terms of weather; spring and autumn can often be the best seasons for a quick break.
What to take; Generally speaking ‘less is more’ and the happiest travellers are those clearing customs with just their hand-luggage as they’re normally out of the airport well before anyone else. A change of clothes and some wash kit should cover most eventualities. Glancing at a weather report before you go should help avoid any embarrassing ‘Bermudas in Moscow in the dead of winter’ incidents.
Taking snaps; It’s always good to have a few tangible memories of your time away and a camera is generally on most people’s ‘must-have’ lists on holiday. Cheap city-breaks should be able to furnish your photo-album with a few amusing piccies and its’ generally best to avoid taking your fantastic state-of-the-art SLR as you’ll probably never use it. Digital cameras are the obvious favourite and combine ease-of-use with portability. They also avoid any film gaffes; just make sure they’re charged.
Money; Traveller’s Cheques are a bit OTT on cheap city-breaks and are far too much hassle. Most bankcards will work in foreign ATM’s but you might want to change a few euros or whatever before you depart and some cash is always handy to avoid getting stranded at the airport if you arrive late at night. Try and keep a credit card or something separate to your wallet just in case you lose it or have it nicked.
Insurance; Easily forgotten but still essential even if you’re in the EU as local medical care can cost money and you’re not necessarily covered. Avoid any disasters by paying a few quid for one-off cover or just take out annual multi-trip cover at the beginning of the year and then forget about it.
